How to Make a Scalloped Quilt
You can make a simple block quilt and embellish the quilt with a scalloped binding edge. Customize the quilt with fabric blocks and scalloped binding in colors and patterns that coordinate with your home's décor. Use the finished quilt as a throw for the living room sofa or drape the quilt over the guestroom bed to provide your guests with some personalized comfort when they visit. The quilts are easy to make, even for novice sewers, and can be completed in less than an hour.

- Paper or cardboard
- 2-inch-wide, double-fold bias binding tape
Instructions
-
-
1
Lay your fabric on your working surface and draw a 12-inch square in one corner. Cut out the square with a sharp pair of scissors or a rotary cutter.
-
2
Place the square on top of your fabric and trace around it. Cut out the square. Continue until you have made 20 squares for a quilt that measures about 48 inches by 60 inches. You can cut additional squares to make the quilt larger.
-
-
3
Lay out the squares on your working surface to form a large rectangle. For the 48-inch by 60-inch quilt, lay four squares across and five squares down.
-
4
Join the squares together by sewing a whipstitch between each adjoining edge.
-
5
Cut a piece of lining fabric to the same size as the joined squares and place the squares face up on top of the wrong side of the lining. Pin the two layers together.
-
6
Make a template for the scalloped edge of the quilt. Draw a curved line across a 12-inch-long piece of paper or cardboard. Make the peak of the curve about 4 inches high. Cut out the template.
-
7
Place the template at one corner of the quilt with the curved peak aligned with one edge. Trace around the template with a piece of chalk. Move the template over to the end of the line and draw another line. Continue all the way around the quilt.
-
8
Use the scissors or rotary cutter to cut around the traced curves on the fabric.
-
9
Pin the scalloped edges of the quilt together again and sew a small straight stitch or a zigzag stitch all the way around the outer edges to join the layers.
-
10
Unravel the 2-inch-wide double-fold binding tape and sandwich one edge of the quilt in between the layers of the binding tape. Pin it in place. Sandwich the entire outer edge of the quilt in between the double layer of the binding tape. Pin it in place.
-
11
Sew the binding tape to the quilt with a straight stitch on the front and back of the quilt.

Tips & Warnings
You can reduce the width of each scallop by making a smaller template. For a frillier-looking fringe, make the template 2 inches wide with a curve peak of 2 inches.
