How to Activate the GUI in an Ubuntu Server

Unlike Ubuntu Linux, Ubuntu Server does not include a graphical user interface (GUI) by default. You can, however, manually update and install "Ubuntu Desktop" to activate the GUI feature on Ubuntu Server. This desktop environment provides a user-friendly interface that makes it easier for you to perform tasks on the server. The GUI features clickable elements (similar to Microsoft Windows or Linux Red Hat), permitting you to access various programs and utilities faster rather than typing commands on a terminal window. You will require administrative rights on the server computer to complete this installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Ubuntu Server computer using your administrator's username and password. Wait until Ubuntu Server launches the terminal screen.

    • 2

Type "sudo apt-get update" (without the quotes) and press the "Enter" key. Type your root password when prompted and press the "Enter" key again.

    • 3

Type "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" (without the quotes) and press "Enter." This command will start the installation of Ubuntu desktop GUI framework.
