How to Re-Thread a Bobbin

How to Re-Thread a Bobbin thumbnail
The bobbin is typically threaded with the same color thread as the sewing needle.

Bobbins are wound in the same way whether you are threading it for the first time or rethreading a used bobbin. When you begin a sewing project, wind the bobbin before threading the needle. Otherwise, you will need to rethread the needle after loading the bobbin. When sewing large projects, you may wish to thread two or more bobbins before beginning to sew. Different sewing machines will have different thread guides in place for winding, but the steps are generally the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any remaining thread from the bobbin.

    • 2

Place the spool of thread on the spool pin.

    • 3

Guide the end of the thread through the thread guides that are designated for bobbin winding. These are different than the guides used to thread the machine needle.

    • 4

Push the end of the thread through the tiny hole in the rim of the bobbin. The end of the thread should be pointing out of the rim and away from the bobbin.

    • 5

Place the bobbin on the bobbin loader. You may need to slide the bobbin to the right or push it down to lock the bobbin loader in place.

    • 6

Hold the end of the thread and press the foot pedal gently to begin winding the bobbin.

    • 7

Wind the bobbin at steady slow or medium speed. The bobbin will stop turning when it is full.

    • 8

Use the scissors to cut the thread joining the wound bobbin and the spool of thread.

    • 9

Remove the wound bobbin from the bobbin loader.

    • 10

Cut the thread that extends from the hole at the bobbin rim. Your bobbin is ready for use.
