How to Create Tousled Curls
Tousled curls for some represent a return to the carefree days of childhood, when hair was naturally curly and rarely combed or brushed. For those with limp, thin, flat hair, curls of any type may be an object of envy, their tantalizing volume and voluptuous appeal appearing to be entirely out of reach. Tousled curls are a major 2011 trend among celebrities such as Madonna, Gisele and Meg Ryan, according to London's Daily Mail. With the right styling tools and products, tousled can be achieved by most anyone. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Heated rollers, 1 inch or more in diameter
- Roller clips
- Curling iron, 1 inch or more in diameter
- Comb
- Light-hold hair spray
- Heat protection spray
- Frizz-reducing cream, gel or serum
- Curl-defining cream, gel or serum
- Shine spray (optional)
Instructions
-
Straight Hair
-
1
Preheat the rollers.
-
2
Divide your hair into eight to 16 sections. If you hair is very thick or coarse, you can use more than 16 sections. The goal is to be sure the light-hold spray coats each section of hair and that the heat of the rollers will penetrate the entire section.
-
-
3
Apply a light-hold spray to each section of hair. The spray does not have to dry before you proceed.
-
4
Roll each section with a large heated roller and secure the roller in place with a clip. Leave the rollers in your hair until they have cooled to room temperature.
-
5
Remove the rollers and finger-comb your hair to achieve a tousled effect. If your hair appears to be losing its curl, apply another light coat of hair spray.
Wavy Hair
-
6
Preheat the curling iron.
-
7
Divide your hair into eight sections. Pin up the other seven sections as you work on each section. If you hair is very thick or coarse, use as many as 16 sections or more. The goal is to be sure the heat protectant coats each section of hair and that the heat of the curling iron will penetrate the entire section.
-
8
Apply the heat protectant to each section of hair. You do not have to let the heat protectant dry before you start curling.
-
9
Place the curling iron in a vertical or near-vertical position and wrap the first section of hair around it. Hold the ends of your hair with your fingers. Do not use the clamp of the iron, as it will crease the hair in an unattractive way. Remove the iron after two or three seconds. Curl each section of hair until you have curled all the hair on your head.
-
10
Wait until your hair cools before finger-combing it. Apply shine spray as needed.
Curly Hair
-
11
Apply a frizz-reducing cream, gel or serum to the hair. This styling product does not need to dry before you proceed.
-
12
Apply a curl-defining cream, gel or serum, if necessary. This styling product does not need to dry before you proceeding. In fact, styling damp curls with the product will help make the curls more pliable, allowing you to better create the tousled effect.
-
13
Run your fingers through your hair to give the curls a sense of movement. Style further with your fingers to achieve a tousled look, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
For straight hair, as an alternative to using heated rollers, wrap large sections of hair around the curling iron at a temperature that is most effective for curling your hair. If your hair is thin and fine, a lower temperature is likely best. For coarser or thicker hair, set the device at a medium or higher temperature.
For extra volume, especially for thin or fine hair, add root lifter or volumizer at hair roots.
If you literally have all night to achieve the look, wrap sections of hair vertically around eight to 12 long, flexible, spiral-curl hair rollers. Sleep comfortably, remove the rollers in the morning and tousle your hair with your fingers.
Using too much heat in any grade of hair is damaging. Be sure not to burn your hair as you are trying to achieve a curly -- or any -- look.
