How to Get Paid to Sew at Home
The tide has turned somewhat for those who are able to sew and who enjoy working with their sewing needle and machine. In the past, some women worked from home, in a low-paid capacity to mend and make clothing for large manufacturers. Changing global politics and the availability of cheap overseas labor has taken away this need. However, many people no longer know how to sew. So, it is now the case that a person who is able to sew has moved from a fairly low status and low paying position to one in which she can pick and choose. She can now offer her services in a variety of ways, for good remuneration.

Review your skills and the type of sewing you would like to do from home. Check out the options in your local area. You may choose to specialize in a particular type of sewing. Some dry cleaning firms delegate work such as alterations and mending to people who work from home. On the other end of the scale you may decide to specialize in wedding and bridesmaids dresses. Some people choose to make soft toys or soft furnishings.

Prepare a business plan, if you decide you want to be self-employed. Call your local county and city government office to inquire about tax and home insurance. Buy suitable equipment. You may just need to have a sewing machine and overlocking machine, initially. If possible, set aside a room in your home, so you do not constantly have to put things away and take them out again.

Advertise your services in the most appropriate places; these may include local dry cleaning establishments or at bridal fairs. Look at the cost of local radio or newspaper advertisements, as these can sometimes be quite affordable. Begin keeping records as soon as you receive your first payments. Consider employing the services of a local accountant to help with financial and tax matters.
