How to Use Plexiglas As a Divider

How to Use Plexiglas As a Divider thumbnail
Divide rooms shared by siblings with a Plexiglas divider.

Plexiglas comes in clear sheets like glass, but it's made of plastic so it's safer to use and easier to work with. Creating dividers out of Plexiglas is a project that doesn't require special tools or carpentry skill. Since the dividers are clear and don't reach all the way to the ceiling, air is able to circulate through the room and light is not blocked from one section. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Home Office

    • 1

Position a large sheet of Plexiglas in the center of the longest wall, so it's dividing the room.

    • 2

Place office desks on either side of the Plexiglas so the desks face each other and sandwich the Plexiglas between them.

    • 3

Paint or cover the Plexiglas with fabric to provide additional privacy for each person.

    Bedroom

    • 4

Build two frames out of 1-by-4 lumber. Make the frames 74 by 38 inches. Build the frames by screwing the pieces together.

    • 5

Lay one frame on the ground. Add a generous amount of construction adhesive to the frame and center a sheet of 72-by-36-inch Plexiglas on it.

    • 6

Place more construction adhesive on the Plexiglas and put the second frame on top so the frames line up and sandwich the Plexiglas between them. Allow the adhesive to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 7

Secure the framed Plexiglas to the wall using L brackets. Screw into the stud to make sure the Plexiglas divider is stable. Use at least three L brackets to fully secure the divider to the wall.

    • 8

Position twin-sized beds on either side of the Plexiglas divider, making the divider a headboard for each bed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make additional framed Plexiglas dividers to create headboard dividers for larger beds or for bigger rooms.
