How to Make Smoke Text
Making text look like smoke can be done using a variety of materials, even an ordinary pencil. The wispy curls of smoke can be made into letters by drawing the smoke in a rough pattern of the letter. Shading and the randomness of the pattern will go a long way in making the letters look real. Smoke has a very elegant flow to it and this flow should be reflected in the letters.

1
Draw and outline of the text on paper. Very lightly trace out the text that will be drawn in block letters. This will provide a rough template for the rest of the drawing.
-
2
Avoid hard edges. Never use the sharp point of the pencil. Smoke does not have hard edges, the edge of smoke lines are graduated and smooth, not harsh.

3
Start each stroke of the pencil with an upward movement. Smoke is always rising. This should be reflected in the letters. Using an upward stroke will help achieve this effect.
-
4
Shade the edges of the letters in. Go over the template by shading the letters in broad sweeping shade strokes. Avoid straight lines. Smoke rarely travels in a straight line. Instead have it curve up the letter like a river winding through a canyon.
-
5
Employ stronger shading on the bottom of the letter and lighter shading on the top. This will give the appearance that the letter is less dense higher up, like real smoke.
-
6
Add very light wisps of smoke coming off the top of the letters. Try to fade the wisps out gradually.
