How to Bead on Canvas
Take your embroidery and needlepoint projects to the next level by stitching beads to the canvas. Base the size of the beads on the size of the holes in the canvas; the beads should be slightly larger than the size of the hole opening. Trace patterns onto the canvas and follow the design lines to make distinctive beaded artwork for home décor and personal accessories. Look for canvas, beads and beading supplies at local craft and fabric stores.
Instructions

Single Bead
-
1
Cut a 36-inch or longer strand of beading thread. Insert one end of the beading thread through the eye of a beading needle. Pull the thread through the eye until the ends are even. Tie the ends of the thread together in an overhand knot to create a double length of beading thread.
-
2
Insert the threaded needle up through a hole in the canvas adjacent to the desired location for the first bead. Reinsert the needle back down through a hole beside the first hole. Pull the thread taut. Repeat two to three times to anchor the beading thread to the canvas. End with the needle on the underside of the canvas.

3
Insert the needle up through a hole in the canvas where you wish to place the first bead; this is hole number one. Pull the thread taut. Slide the bead over the needle and thread. Insert the needle down through the canvas in the hole adjacent to the one with the bead. This is hole number two. Pull the thread taut.
-
4
Insert the needle back up through hole number one. Separate the two strands of beading thread. Place one on each side of the bead. Insert the needle down through hole number two. Pull the thread taut.
-
5
Follow the same process to add one bead at a time to the canvas. Tie a knot in the beading thread on the back side of the canvas after all the beads are in place.
Multiple Beads
-
6
Thread a beading needle with beading thread, double the thread and tie a knot in the end. Anchor the thread to the canvas.
-
7
Insert the needle up through a hole in the canvas at the desired location of the first bead in the multiple string of beads. Slide three to five beads onto the beading thread. Stretch the multiple bead string in any direction on the canvas. Insert the needle back down through the canvas at the desired location.
-
8
Thread a second beading needle with a length of beading thread. Anchor the thread to the canvas between the second and third beads on the first multiple bead stitch. This threaded needle is the couching needle and will serve to anchor the multiple bead strand in place on the canvas.
-
9
Insert the couching needle up through the hole in the canvas next to the second bead in the multiple bead strand. Hold the multiple bead strand taut, pass the couching needle across the beads and insert the needle back down into the canvas. Pull the couching thread taut.
-
10
Repeat the process to add multiple beads at a time to the canvas. Tack the bead strand in place with the couching needle between every two to three beads.
