How to Make Embroidery Friendship Bracelets With Knots

Embroidery-floss friendship bracelets are staple craft projects of the recess and summer camp set. Available in a wide range of colors, from bright primary shades to glittery metallics, embroidery floss makes an ideal thread for hand-knotted friendship bracelets. While there are many variations on the classic, a traditional friendship bracelet features diagonal rows of alternating colors. Four strands of embroidery floss create a friendship bracelet that is approximately 1/2-inch wide, depending on how tightly you tie the knots.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the four strands of embroidery floss together at one end. Tie them together in a single square knot 1 inch from the top.

    • 2

Slide the sharp end of a safety pin through the knot. Pin it to your pants leg, a tablecloth or a pillow to secure it.

    • 3

Pick up the first string on the left. Wrap it over, under and back around the second string.

    • 4

Hold the second string tight. Pull the first string to tighten the knot.

    • 5

Repeat steps three and four so that you have a double knot around the second string.

    • 6

Use the first string to tie double knots around the third and fourth strings, just as you did the second. You will now have a row of knots in a single color and the string that was on the left will be on the right.

    • 7

Repeat all steps with the string that is now on the left, which will be the second color. Continue working in this manner, making a row of double knots with each color to create diagonal stripes, until your bracelet is as long as you want it to be.

Tie the loose ends of the floss together in a second square knot to end the bracelet. Remove the safety pin and use the ends of the floss to tie the bracelet onto the recipient's wrist.
