How to Double-Crochet in Working a Round

How to Double-Crochet in Working a Round thumbnail
Double crochet rounds are used for projects such as placemats, doilies and decorative flowers.

Crocheting in the round produces material for projects such as coasters, placemats, doilies and afghans. Rounds can be worked in various stitches or patterns, but a basic double crochet round is easy for beginning crocheters to complete. The only skill needed to crochet in rounds that is not necessarily needed when crocheting in other shapes is the slip stitch, which is very simple to create.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the number of chain stitches indicated by your pattern. If you are not working from a pattern, start with four chain stitches. Create chain stitches by placing a slip knot on the hook, drawing the yarn from the skein around the hook's tip and sliding the hook through the slip knot. One chain stitch is created. Repeat this until you have the desired number of chain stitches, but do not count the slip knot as a stitch.

Create a ring with a slip stitch. Insert the hook's tip through the first chain stitch created. You will now have that chain stitch and one other loop on your hook. Pull the yarn from the skein around the hook's tip, and draw the hook through the chain stitch and the loop on the hook in one motion to make a slip stitch. Your work is now in a ring shape.

Make a double crochet stitch in the ring. Create a double crochet stitch by making two chain stitches. Wrap the yarn around the hook's tip. Insert the hook through the ring's center. Wrap the yarn around the hook's tip again, and draw the hook through two of the loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook's tip once again, and draw the hook through the remaining two loops on the hook. One double crochet stitch is complete.

    • 4

Make another double crochet stitch in the ring by repeating Step 3, except for the first two chain stitches. Continue to make double crochet stitches until you have the total number of double crochet stitches specified by your pattern. If you are not working from a pattern, make six double crochet stitches in the ring.

    • 5

Join the last double crochet stitch of the round to the first double crochet stitch of the round by making a slip stitch in the top of the first double crochet stitch.

    • 6

Add double crochet rounds by repeating Steps 3 and 4. You will need to add more double crochet stitches to each additional round because each round will be larger than the previous round. For instance, if you made six double crochet stitches in the first round, you will need roughly eight double crochet stitches in the second round.
