How to Install a Natural Stone Sheet Mosaic

Mosaic tiles, unlike regular tiles, are generally less than two inches across and mounted on mesh sheets in large groups, instead of in singles. This allows for relatively easy installation, so they go on much quicker, even though the tiles are much smaller than standard. You need to grout natural stone, as with any other type of mosaic, after you install the tiles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the floor into four squares with your chalk snapline, laying two intersecting lines that intersect at the middle of the floor.,

    • 2

Spread thinset onto the floor using a notched trowel, in one of the corners the intersection forms. Cover enough of the area to set one of the mesh sheets of mosaic tile in place. Set the sheet in place, using the lines as guides to keep it all straight.

    • 3

Press down all the tiles individually to make sure they're set in the mortar.

    • 4

Spread additional mortar and lay additional mosaic sheets, side by side, building out from the middle of the floor toward the edges in a grid pattern. Keep the sheets spaced from each other by the same space as is between tiles on the sheets

    • 5

Trim the sheets to fit against the walls at the perimeter of the floor, using your razor knife to cut the mesh between the tiles. If you must cut tiles to make a fit, cut them on your wet saw.

    • 6

Let the mortar set overnight. Spread grout over the surface with your grout float, pressing it into the spaces. Use a damp sponge to take up the excess grout.
