How to Carve Initials in a Tree
A time-honored tradition for commemorating young love and marking where you've been, carving initials into trees can be creative as well as meaningful. With a good knife and a lot of care and control, you can make your presence known to future travelers who happen on that same spot. This is an undertaking that you need to get right the first time, as you do not want to damage or deface the tree any more than is absolutely necessary to accomplish your task. Choose the spot on the tree where you will carve. This should be roughly at eye-level.

Press the tip of the knife into the bark of the tree using steady pressure. For round letters, such as an "O," carve half of the circle first, starting at the top and ending at the bottom of the curve. Carve the second half of the circle afterwards, using the same technique.

Touch up your letters to make them even. Use short, downward strokes to ensure safety and accuracy.

Clean your knife. Fold it and store it safely in a pocket or bag.

Brush off the tree's surface with your sleeve or hand.
