Make a scarf in colors to match every outfit in your wardrobe.

An oblong scarf is cut to provide the wearer with a long fashion accessory without the bulk that can come from square-shaped scarves. Individuals without any previous sewing experience can make a no-sew oblong scarf from a soft, jersey knit fabric or a fleece scarf to keep you warm and stylish all winter long. You can also give your sewing skills a simple workout and make an oblong silk scarf, for a warm weather accessory.

Instructions

  1. No-Sew Jersey Knit Rayon Jersey Scarf

    • 1

Lay your jersey knit fabric on your working surface.

    • 2

Use a piece of chalk to draw a 90-inch by 20-inch rectangle. You can modify the measurements to make a shorter or thinner scarf.

    • 3

Cut out the rectangle with a sharp pair of scissors or a rotary cutter.

    • 4

Draw a wavy line across the two short ends of the rectangle.

    • 5

Cut along the wavy lines with the scissors or rotary cutter for decorative scarf ends.

    No-Sew Fleece Scarf

    • 6

Lay your fleece fabric on your working surface and draw a rectangle that measures about 7-inches wide by 64-inches long.

    • 7

      Cut out the fleece rectangle.

    • 8

Make slits up from each short end to make fringe. Make each slit about 4-inches long and space the slits about 1-inch apart.

    • 9

Make a small 1/2-inch slit in the center of each fringe.

    • 10

Tuck one long slit into the 1/2-inch slit in its center and pull. Repeat with each piece of fringe.

    Silk Scarf

    • 11

Lay your silk on the working surface with any patterned side facing downward. Draw a 10-inch by 60-inch rectangle on the silk with a piece of chalk. You can change the measurements to make a larger or smaller scarf.

    • 12

      Cut out the silk rectangle.

    • 13

Fold over about 1/8-inch along one long edge onto the wrong side of the fabric. Iron to crease the fold.

    • 14

Fold over another 1/8-inch along the same edge. Iron and sew a straight stitch along the fold to keep it in place.

    • 15

Repeat the folding and sewing steps along the remaining three sides to create smooth, finished edges for the scarf.
