How to Tie a Shamrock Knot
The shamrock knot has a number of names, depending on the country it is tied in. In Ireland, this decorative knot is said to bring good luck. The finished knot has three loops representing shamrock leaves arranged around a central, square-shaped center knot with the two ends of the rope forming the stem of the shamrock. Use a soft rope for tying this knot, as the shamrock doesn't hold together well with braided, plastic ropes.

1
Hold the rope in your left hand about 3 feet from the right end. The right end is the tag end. Wrap the tag end of the rope once around your left hand, forming a loop. Pass the tag end through the loop from behind, forming a single overhand knot, but do not draw it tight. This leaves the overhand knot in a loop which you are holding in your left hand.

2
Bring the tag end of the rope back through the overhand knot loop from behind, leaving a three inch long loop of rope at the top. Take the tag end up and around the left side of the loop to the back and bring it through the loop, forming a second overhand knot.

3
Leave the second overhand knot loose and keep the three inch long loop at the top of the knot. This leaves you with two, interlinked overhand knots, a loop at the top and the two rope ends exiting at the bottom.
-
4
Reach between the point where the rope crosses itself in the first overhand knot with your left thumb and forefinger and grasp the loop portion of the second overhand knot.

5
Draw the two loops out of the knot about 3 inches. As you pull them out, you will see the center of the knot form into a symmetrical square with the two ends of the rope exiting the bottom of the knot together.
-
6
Pull the knot tight gradually with the loops. Adjust the loop lengths with the two rope ends, as you pull the loops tight.
