How to Install Window Millwork

Millwork, or trim, around a window serves to close off the space between the window casing and the surrounding wall. This serves both a visual function, making the window looked finished, and a practical function, in that it helps seal out air. You should choose your millwork so that it matches or augments the other trim in the room. There are several ways to arrange the trim around the window, with a mitered cut being among the easiest, as long as you have a good miter saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top horizontal span of the window opening, at the edge of the casing, from one corner to the other.

    • 2

Mark out that measurement on a piece of millwork trim, putting two pencil marks along the bottom edge with the measured span between them.

    • 3

Put the trim on the miter saw, so the front side is facing up and the bottom edge faces the blade. Move the piece so one mark is under the blade. Swivel the blade so it points 45 degrees outward, or away from the piece. Cut it.

    • 4

Move the trim to put the second mark under the blade. Turn the blade to point 45 degrees in the opposite direction as before, which will again point outward. Make the cut.

    • 5

Hold the trim up to the wall above the window, so the bottom edge of the trim is aligned with the top edge of the window casing. The two mitered ends should rise up and out over the two upper corners.

    • 6

Secure the piece with your trim nailer, shooting nails every foot along the top and bottom edges of the trim.

    • 7

Measure, cut and hang the trim for the remaining four sides of the window in the same manner. The mitered ends of the pieces should butt tightly to each other to form the corners.

    • 8

Run beads of caulk around the trim where it meets the window and the wall.
