How to Decorate a Pastry Table

How to Decorate a Pastry Table thumbnail
Pastry table decorations should show off the food.

A pastry table is the highlight of an event for people with a sweet tooth. Instead of allowing the desserts to speak for themselves, choose decorations that bring out the colors and textures of each pastry. In doing so, you can turn a table into a focal point in the room. As you plan decorations, keep in mind that they should support rather than overshadow the desserts. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out linens on your table. Choose a color and a finish that will set the mood for the table and complement the types of pastries you will be setting out. Look for linens that will support the theme of the event. If you want an extra special touch, create fabric swags in a contrasting material on the sides of the table; pin them to the cloth with heavy-duty hat pins.

    • 2

Wrap sturdy boxes in fabric to create levels on the pastry table. Depending on the length of the table, create two to three groupings of two boxes in different heights. Use boxes that will not collapse under the weight of a dessert and place them with your star pastries in mind.

    • 3

Put out the pastries if you are decorating on the same day; if not, use similar dishes so you can get an idea of what will go where. On the boxes, put the pastries you want to get the most attention; you can also use them for things that are easy to take off the tray.

Use greenery to decorate the area around the pastry dishes. If you want to create a clean look, line the edges of the table with vines or with evergreen boughs. To complement pastries with very little color or those that use spring colors, scatter flowers or put out cut flowers in small vases. Use just enough to make a statement and keep the focus on the pastries.

Add smaller accents around the trays to echo the greenery on the table. If you are using flowers, tuck individual blooms underneath a pie pan or a tray liner. You can also put a few small leaves so they peek out from under the dishes on the levels. For an evening event, consider scattering small tealight candles around the table so the light reflects off of the dishes.
