How to Make a Chikorita Tank

How to Make a Chikorita Tank thumbnail
Raising Chikorita is a long, sometimes tedious, but rewarding task.

Chikorita, a Grass-type Pokemon, was introduced in the "Pokemon Gold" and "Pokemon Silver" games in 1999. Like other pre-evolution Pokemon, Chikorita's stats are not amazing in comparison to its more evolved kin Bayleef and Meganium. However, that isn't to say that Chikorita is entirely worthless. Whether you're saving the character for low-level tournaments or just preserving its cuteness, you might have reasons not to evolve Chikorita. And Chikorita is not defenseless: with the proper moves and training, this adorable plant Pokemon has the capability to become a defensive monster -- a true tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a Chikorita. In the Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum games, you'll need to import a Chikorita from a GBA game through the Pal Park, or trade with someone who has a Chikorita in their HeartGold or SoulSilver game. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Chikorita is one of the three Pokemon you may choose at the beginning of the game.

    • 2

Put your new Chikorita in the daycare along with the Pokemon Ditto. Hatch the eggs that the Daycare Man gives you until you find a Chikorita with a nature that increases one defensive stat without lowering another. Good defensive natures to look for are Bold, Impish, Calm and Careful.

    • 3

Choose the defensive moves you would like your Chikorita tank to have. Two moves should be "Reflect" and "Light Screen" as these will provide an enormous bonus to your Chikorita's defensive capabilities. The third defensive move should either recover HP or status ailments, so choose "Synthesis" for the former or "Aromatherapy" for the latter.

    • 4

Activate TM 06 to teach your Chikorita the move "Toxic." Use this powerful new move to defeat wild Pokemon, gain experience and move up the levels.

    • 5

Teach Chikorita the HP-restoring move Synthesis when it attains level 12. Afterwards, teach it the moves Reflect at level 17 and Light Screen at level 31. If you would like to replace Synthesis with Aromatherapy, continue to level Chikorita to 42.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once Chikorita is fully trained and ready for battle, give it an item that will accentuate its powerful tanking abilities. A "Light Clay" will extend the duration of both Reflect and Light Screen. The item "Leftovers" would also be handy as it regenerates 1/16 of Chikorita's max HP at the end of every turn.

  • While training Chikorita, find Onix, Graveler, Tentacool and Tentacruel to defeat as these will increase Chikorita's own defense and special defense. If Chikorita is having trouble defeating these Pokemon, give it an Exp. Share to hold and have one of your more powerful Pokemon do the fighting instead.

  • As great as Chikorita may be as a tank, it could always be a better tank simply by being allowed to evolve into Bayleef or Meganium, both of whom have better base stats than Chikorita.

  • Chikorita can be a a daunting defensive wall, but it can still incur unnecessarily large amounts of damage if you keep it out for too long against foes with fire, ice, flying, poison or bug-type attacks.
