Sponges are one of the most-used items in the kitchen and often the dirtiest. Sponges are used to clean counters, dishes and appliances. Unless they are sanitized often, they can build up a level of germs that can be hazardous to your health. Clean your sponges regularly to keep the level of bacteria to a minimum. Things You'll Need

  • Anti-bacterial dish detergent
  • Microwave
  • Hot water
  • Dishwasher
  • Tongs

Instructions

      Add some anti-bacterial dish detergent to the sponge and wash thoroughly in hot water.

      Place the sponge in a solution of 1 tbsp. bleach and 1 gallon of water and rinse completely.

      Wring out the sponge out and place it in the microwave for two minutes on high. If the sponge begins to burn or scorch, remove immediately. Remove the sponge from the microwave with a pair of tongs for safety.

      Place your sponge in the top rack of your dishwasher while running a load. This will clean and sterilize the sponge as well.
