How to Get Genius on the Bottom Bar of the iPod Touch

Use the Genius feature on your iPod Touch to make playlists.

When you want to listen to music with your iPod Touch you might prefer to let the Music app's "Genius" feature generate a playlist of songs for you, just as you can with Apple's free iTunes application on your computer. To use the Genius feature, you tap a song, then Genius creates a playlist of songs that go with the song you selected. You need to sync your iPod Touch with iTunes and enable Genius with the application on your computer before you can use Genius on the device.

Preparation

1. Launch Apple's free iTunes application on the computer.

2. Click "Store" at the top of the iTunes window, then click "Turn on Genius." The Genius window appears, with information about how iTunes Genius works. Click the "Turn on Genius" button in the Genius window. The iTunes application sends information about the songs in your library to Apple via the Internet.

3. Click a song in your iTunes library that you want to use as the basis for a Genius playlist, then click the "Genius" button at the bottom right of the iTunes window. A list of songs appears in the iTunes window and three buttons appear in the "Based On" bar at the top of the list.

4. Click the "Save Playlist" button to save the Genius mix as a playlist with the name of the song you initially chose to start the list. Each Genius playlist appears in the left pane of the iTunes window under "Genius."

5. Connect the iPod Touch to a USB port on the computer with the included USB cable. Click the icon of the iPod Touch in the left pane of the iTunes application window. Click the "Music" tab, then click the "Sync Music" check box. Click "Sync."

6. Click the "Eject" button next to the icon of the iPod Touch, then disconnect the device from the computer.

Put Genius at the Bottom of the iPod Touch

1. Press the "Home" button, located below the display of the iPod Touch.

2. Tap the "Music" icon to launch the app.

3. Tap "More" at the bottom of the display.

4. Tap "Edit" at the top of the display. The "Configure" screen appears.

5. Touch the "Genius" icon and drag it from the "Configure" list to the bottom bar. There is room for four different icons in the bottom bar, such as "Playlists," "Artists" and "Albums." Tap "Done."
