Hand dye yarn using Kool-Aid packets.

When you buy plain white or light-colored cotton yarn for a project, you may not always use all of the yarn. Although you can save the yarn for another project that calls for white or light-colored yarn, you can also dye the yarn using supplies that you may have right at home, such as Kool-Aid packets. Pour the contents of a Kool-Aid packet in a dye bath to stain the yarn different colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a stock pot with 1 gallon of water and heat the water over high heat until it begins to boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low so that the water simmers.

    • 2

Pour 1 cup of table salt and 4 packets of colored Kool-Aid into the simmering water. Stir the solution with a wooden spoon for 1 minute until the ingredients are completely combined.

    • 3

Insert the cotton yarn into the Kool-AId dye solution and push the yarn ball into the water with the wooden spoon to completely submerge it. Simmer the yarn ball for 20 minutes.

    • 4

Rinse out the Kool-Aid dyed cotton yarn in cold water until the water runs clear. Squeeze out the excess water gently with your hands.

    • 5

Lay the dyed cotton yarn ball onto a towel to air dry for 6 hours.
