How to Fix HP Pavilion Dv9700 LCD Problems

Many of your HP Pavilion dv9700 laptop's LCD problems can be traced to the inverter. The inverter is a thin circuit board built into the LCD screen that transfers power from the motherboard to the LCD screen's backlighting system. If the inverter board is failing, you will experience LCD issues, like dim backlighting, a blank screen and/or severe pixel discoloration. Replacing the HP Pavilion's inverter board involves dismantling the LCD panel.

Things You'll Need

• Antistatic wrist strap
• Flat-head screwdriver
• Phillips-head screwdriver

Instructions

1. Shut down your laptop through the Windows operating system. Disconnect the power cable and all external data and networking cables. Attach an antistatic strap to your wrist. This discharges static electricity from your body to prevent electrical damage to the LCD screen.

2. Pull the LCD panel closed and place the laptop face down. Rotate the computer so the front is facing you and push on the battery's release button. Pull the battery pack out of its compartment.

3. Place the laptop face up again and pull open the display lid. Use a thin, flat-head screwdriver to pry the five rubber screw caps from the display panel's front bezel. The bezel is the main plastic piece on the front of the LCD screen.

4. Loosen and remove the five Phillips-head screws revealed by the rubber screw caps. Grasp each end of the bezel and carefully peel it from the display panel. Remove the bezel from the panel to reveal the internal LCD components.

5. Disconnect the two power cables from each end of the inverter board located inside the bottom edge of the display panel just below the LCD screen. Remove the single Phillips-head screw fastening the inverter in place. Peel away any adhesive tape from the inverter, if necessary. Lift the inverter out of the LCD panel and throw it away.

6. Place the new inverter board inside the compartment below the LCD screen. Line up the inverter's screw hole with the screw hole inside the compartment. Fasten the inverter to the display panel with the Phillips screw included with the replacement kit. Reconnect the power cables to each end of the new inverter.

7. Put the bezel back on top of the LCD panel. Replace the five retaining Phillips screws and their individual screw caps.
