1
Examine the plant for black branches or stems that are dead, especially near the tips. Prune the stems back to healthy tissue using hand pruners, or prune off the limbs entirely using a pruning saw. Prune all limbs back to the junction at the main trunk, and angle them downward so they don't collect water.

2
Examine the height of the Vera Cruz Rose plumeria to determine if you want it to be shorter. If so, cut the vertical limbs back to any height desired using the pruning saw or loppers. You can even top the tree completely at the top of the main vertical trunk, and it will regrow new branches. Do not cut it lower than 12 inches above the ground.

Tips & Warnings
Wait until the early spring, after the threat of frost is over, but before the Vera Cruz Rose plumeria has produced new leaves for the year. The lack of leaves allows you to better see the branches to prune them.
Instead of throwing away the healthy pruned portions, consider planting them in soil so they develop roots. The Vera Cruz Rose is a rare plumeria, and the cuttings are highly valued.
