DIY 4-Way Wiring

DIY 4-Way Wiring thumbnail
Wiring a four-way switch allows enhanced lighting control.

When it's necessary to turn room lights on or off from two different locations, a four-way switch is necessary. These switches "relay" the AC power from one switch to the next, allowing the same circuit to be controlled from multiple locations. Wiring these switches is similar to a conventional two-pole switch, with the wiring inside the switch designed to facilitate a more convenient wiring scheme for the task. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the breaker at main panel, controlling the light switch.

    • 2

Identify the four wires in the wall one pair on the left, one pair on the right of the switch box opening.

    • 3

Strip one inch of insulation from the white neutral and black hot wires, on each side of the switch box.

    • 4

Loosen the four screws on the switch, two on each side. Identify the brass and silver-colored screws. Look for the "IN" and "OUT" labels, corresponding to each.

    • 5

Wire the pair of wires leading from the left side of the switch box to the "IN" pair of terminals. Screw the black hot wire to the brass-colored screw, using the Philips screwdriver. Screw the white wire into the silver-tone screw.

    • 6

Repeat the procedure on the "OUT" side, matching the wire color to the screw color.

    • 7

Slide the switch into the wall, taking care to not detach the wires from the back of the switch. Fix the switch to the switch box, using the small standard screws and screwdriver. Screw the cover plate to the wall with the standard screwdriver.

    • 8

Flip the breaker back on in the panel. Turn on the four-way switch, and the other switches in line, testing for functionality.
