With intermediary software, you can make an IP camera act like a webcam.

The D-Link DCS-950G is an internet camera that can send its video signal directly to the internet for viewing. This setup is designed for security and monitoring, but it is not ideal for use as a webcam since it does not easily interface with chat programs such as Skype or iChat. By using some intermediary software, it is possible to use the DCS-950G like a traditional webcam; it can then be used with almost any chat program.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the camera for internet monitoring with the included software. Note the web address or IP address of the camera once it is running.

    • 2

Download and install the WebcamXP or Willing Webcam software (see links under Resources).

    • 3

Follow the onscreen prompts to configure your camera with the intermediary software. You will need to enter the web address or IP address of your camera.

    • 4

Choose the video output option in the intermediary software to send the camera's output as a video driver.

    • 5

Open your video chat software and choose the webcam as your video device to begin using it as a webcam.
