How Do I Glue a Collage?

How Do I Glue a Collage? thumbnail
Related images in a collage work together to tell a story.

The collage technique allows artists to build up images comprised of different, not necessarily related, pictures to create a new whole. Collage techniques are also used by scrapbookers and greeting card makers as well as artists who use collage to make large wall-hanging works of art. Care should be taken when positioning images on a collage, as once the images are glued into place on a base they cannot be moved.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your first image upside down and lay it on a piece of scrap paper or card. Apply a thin layer of glue to the back of the image, making sure the glue goes right up to the edges of the image.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of glue to the area of your base where you will stick the image.

    • 3

Put the image in place and smooth it down with your fingertips, removing any air bubbles and paying particular attention to the edges of the image.

    • 4

Repeat the process with all the other images that will make up your collage. When gluing one image on top of another, take care that the glue does not seep out from beneath the top image and become visible around the edges.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are various types of glue that are suitable for use in collages. Glue sticks, white craft glue, or decoupage glue can all be used, although you should look for a glue that is acid free, as this will protect paper images over time and prevent them becoming yellow and brittle.
