How to Do a Flat Fell Seam

How to Do a Flat Fell Seam thumbnail
Make your homemade pants look professional with flat-feel seams.

Achieving a professional-looking garment from the comfort of your own home means using the correct type of seam. When constructing your own pair of jeans or khaki pants a flat-feel seam provides a professional finish. The sturdy flat-feel seam appears to have no seam allowance, as it is cleverly concealed. The concealment of the seam allowance also prevents visible fraying over time and use.

Place your two pieces of fabric together with the wrong sides facing each other. Sew the pieces together with a 5/8-inch seam allowance.

Iron the seam allowance to one side. Trim the bottom seam allowance to 1/8 inch.

    • 3

Fold the top seam allowance length-wise 1/4 inch toward the bottom one. Iron the fold.

    • 4

Sew the folded edge down as close to the edge as possible to finish the seam.
