How to Fill Up a Dark Soul Gem in "Oblivion"
"The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" has several soul gems that you can buy, find or steal that allow you to recharge magical items. Black Soul Gems are more rare and relatively few of these gems can be found or purchased. It is much simpler to make your own Black Soul Gem and once you have created it, it's a simple matter to fill it with the soul of an enemy. Once it's full, you can use it for the same effects as the filled regular Soul Gems.

Go to the Mystic Emporium in Imperial City. This is located in the Market District in the northeast portion of the city. Purchase an empty Grand Soul Gem from this store. There are also empty Grand Soul Gems in a display case at the Arcane University in the Arch Mage's Lobby, so steal one of these if you don't have enough money to buy one.

Go to Edgar's Discount Spells in the Market District of the Imperial City. Purchase a "Soul Trap" spell. Go to the Dark Fissure, which is a cave located to the southeast of Cheydinhal. Time your arrival so you get there approximately five to 10 minutes before midnight.

Approach the altar outside of the Dark Fissure cave entrance. If you see a beam of light coming down from the sky onto the altar, click on the altar and place the empty Grand Soul Gem inside. This beam is known as the "Shade of the Revenant." If there is no beam of light, use the "Wait" option for 24 hours and check again. The beam of light comes down every eight days, so you may have to wait a few times before the light appears.

Cast the "Soul Trap" spell on the altar to create a Black Soul Gem. Click on the altar and pick up the gem. Exit this area, then start a fight with any enemy or with a civilian in any town.

Attack this enemy or civilian until his or her health is almost gone. You can check the health bar over his head to see his remaining heath. Cast "Soul Trap," then finish off the enemy. The soul will fill an empty soul gem in your inventory. If you've killed a civilian, his soul can only enter Black Soul Gems, but other enemies could land in any empty soul gem in your inventory. If you want to be sure to fill the Black Soul Gem then it's best to either have only filled soul gems of other types or to only be carrying an empty Black Soul Gem.
