How to Locate a Map That Shows Where Parrots Are Found
Maps are excellent tools for discovering where things are on the earth, how to travel from one location to another and the size of land masses and bodies of water. Satellite technology and global positioning systems allow cartographers -- those who draw maps -- to create spatial representations of increasing detail and precision. Computer mapping also enables the cartographic process to increase its velocity, producing more maps in less time. Still, some maps are so specialized as to lack widespread distribution. Searching for a map that shows the global distribution of parrots may require some digging. Experts are your best recourse.

1
Make an inquiry with the Association of American Geographers. This is the professional association of scholars and scientists who use maps in their regular course of work, whether in academia, government or industry. Obtain contact information for the specialty sections on animal geography, biogeography, Australia, Africa and Latin America.
-
2
Connect by phone or e-mail with each designated contact person. Ask if any current section members specialize in the Neotropical, Ethiopian or Australian faunal regions. Such experts are known as zoogeographers, who focus on the spatial distribution of animals. Request a work number, or any other permissible contact information, for each.

3
Petition each referral for information regarding where you may find maps representing the dispersion of parrot species. You might speak to geographers that possess the desired information in their own databases. Otherwise, ask for a list of map sources available on line or in hard copy format.

4
Inquire in a similar fashion with the American Library Association's Map and Geography Roundtable. Member librarians specialize in geographic information systems, paper maps and rare atlases and gazetteers. Use the contact information on MAGERT's web site to find out which constituent librarians either have the map of parrot habitats or know where one can be found.
