How to Apply Double-Folded Quilt Binding

Finish your quilt with a fabric you can include in the border to blend the binding in.

A double-folded quilt binding finishes the edges of a handmade quilt and creates a durable border around the outer edge. The double-folded binding has two layers of fabric holding the quilt top, back and batting together and is more durable than the single-folded type, which has only a single layer of binding. Double-folded binding appears as a long strip of complementary fabric folded in half lengthwise and ironed to create a crease.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the raw edge of your quilt binding on top of the quilt, touching the raw edges. Begin the binding along the center of one quilt edge and drape it along the outer edge of the quilt to ensure that no seams are lying on the quilt corners. Pin the first section of quilt binding to the quilt using straight pins or hemming clips; stop at the corner.

    • 2

Fold the quilt binding into a 45-degree angle up and away from the quilt. Hold it with your fingers and, moving downward, fold it back down over the fold in the direction of the next side of the quilt. Leave a fabric triangle underneath the square fold. Align the second fold with the edge of the quilt. Secure the folded corner with pins or clips.

    • 3

Repeat the steps above for each edge and corner. When you get to the end of your binding, cut the ends at opposing 45-degree angles and sew them together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 4

Sew around the quilt connecting the binding and quilt using a straight stitch with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins or clips as you sew to prevent machine needle damage. Trim the excess thread using scissors.

    • 5

Fold the binding over to the other side of the quilt and secure again using pins or clips. The corners should create a mitered 45-degree angle just by folding over each binding edge.

    • 6

Thread an applique needle using the same thread and hand-sew through the folded binding and the quilt but do not press the needle through the front binding.
