How to Make Hearts With Straws

Choose drinking straws in matching or contrasting colors.

Plastic drinking straws have many uses besides making drinks last longer. They make easy children's crafts, such as straw flowers and hearts. Use straw shapes to adorn an art project or decorate a room. Make your own straw heart using colorful straight and bendable drinking straws. Then make a series of straw hearts to create a heart chain for a wind chime or mobile.

Things You'll Need

• 2 bendable drinking straws, 9mm diameter
• 2 straight drinking straws, 9mm diameter
• 2 metal paper clips

Instructions

1. Set one straight and one bendable drinking straw on the right-hand side of the work area. Then place one straight and one bendable drinking straw on the left side of the work area. There will be a total of four drinking straws used to make the straw heart.

2. Open two paper clips by pulling the large loop on each paper clip to the left and the small inner loop of each paper clip to the right, forming a "V" shape. The open paper clips will serve as joints when connecting the straws. Set the paper clips aside after opening.

3. Insert the small loop of one open paper clip into the bottom hole of the straight straw placed on the right side of the work area. Then insert the large loop of the paper clip into the bottom hole of the straight straw placed on the left side of the work area. The result will be a "V" shape.

4. Squeeze 2 inches of the left and right bottom portion of both bendable straws together with your thumb and index fingers. Insert the 2-inch folded ends of each bendable straw into top hole of the corresponding straight straw, until the fold is no longer visible.

5. Bend the joints of the bendable straws down into the center of the "V" shaped straws, creating the center of the heart. Then insert the small loop of the second paper clip into the top hole of the right bendable straw and the large loop of the paper clip into the top hole of the left bendable straw to complete the straw heart.
