How to Decorate a Hamburger Cake
A custom decorated cake is a great way to tie a party theme together. There are lots of decorating techniques that can make a dull cake into a work of art. A decorated hamburger cake is a larger representation of an actual hamburger, using frosting, candy and cake in lieu of condiments, toppings and meat. A hamburger theme cake goes well with a barbecue or other outdoor celebration. The base of the cake starts with three round cake layers of your choice. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place one cake layer on the cake board -- stiff cardboard covered in foil also works well -- and frost the sides with light brown frosting. This will represent the bottom bun of a hamburger.
-
2
Lay the second cake on top and frost with dark brown frosting on the sides. Gently press the cookie crumbs into the sides of the second cake layer to imitate the texture of a cooked hamburger patty.

3
Use the food coloring to color small batches of frosting to make red and yellow; a few tablespoons of each. This will represent the ketchup and mustard on the cake.
-
4
Load each colored frosting into a pastry bag; cut the tip to the desired size. Pipe the frosting toward the edge of the second layer, coming over on the sides a little (mimicking ketchup and mustard on a burger). Frosting toward the middle of the cake will not be visible in the final piece.

5
Cut round shapes from the green rolled fruit snacks and place on top, coming over the sides slightly. These represent the lettuce of the burger. For a realistic look, ruffle the edges a little bit.
-
6
Cut round shapes from the red rolled fruit snacks to represent tomato slices. Place offset from the green slices, coming over on the sides of the cake.
-
7
Cut a rounded edge on the third cake layer. Cover with light brown frosting to represent the top bun.
-
8
Place the top cake section on top of the assembly. Sprinkle the rice cereal to represent a sesame seed bun.
