Add volume to your hair to create the faux hawk ponytail.

Fashion your hair into a faux hawk ponytail for a stylish updo. The style derives its name from the Mohawk because of the enhanced volume on top of the head, which is in the same shape as the famous spiked center hairstyle. The faux hawk ponytail is a softer, more feminine option; however, the look can be revved up to resemble a rock-goddess hairdo. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and condition hair as normal. Apply a volumizing mousse or gel to damp hair and comb it through from roots to tips. Use your fingers to massage the scalp so the volumizer saturates the roots.

    • 2

Blow-dry the hair in sections to create maximum volume throughout the entire head. Use a brush to pull the sections of hair upward and away from the face.

    • 3

Tease the hair 2 to 3 inches from the scalp, at the crown of your head, using a fine-toothed comb. This will add volume to the top of your head.

    • 4

Create a large triangle at the crown of your head using a fine-toothed comb. The triangle points should be from the corners of both eyes to the center crown of your head.

    • 5

Pull the hair up into a ponytail and secure at the crown of your head. The ponytail should be somewhat loose to prevent flattening the hair.

    • 6

Brush the back of your hair into a high, tight ponytail secured just below the first ponytail.

    • 7

Spray the hair with a medium-hold hairspray to secure any flyaways.

    • 8

Massage your scalp and lift the hair with your fingers to create volume. The more hair you lift, the bigger the crown of your hair will be.

    • 9

Spray the hair with a medium-hold hairspray once you reach your desired height to secure the style. To increase volume on top, insert the end of the fine-toothed comb into the hair and pull upward or use your fingers to add volume. Add bobby pins to hair that will not remain in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tousle the hair with your fingers to create loose strands for a rock-star look.

  • Pair the hairstyle with slim jeans, a fitted T-shirt and stilettos for a night out.
