Cardboard castles can be made from a variety of materials.

Castles hold a fascination for many people, and building them, along with complete scenery, is a simple process of using recycled materials. Adults will need to help younger children with cutting and pasting, but nearly any age can paint or color in the details of the castle and trees. Objects found outside, such as sand, rocks and sticks, can also add a bit of authenticity to the castle's scenery.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the base, or the flat cardboard that you will build everything else onto. The cardboard base should be about two or three inches larger than the actual castle you are going to build.

    • 2

Make trees using toilet paper rolls and green tissue paper. The cardboard roll can be left as is, or made to look more like a tree with limbs by cutting triangular pieces out of the top. Paint the trunk brown and allow to dry. Ball up the green tissue paper. Glue to the top of the paper roll. Children can add a other details, such as red dots to represent apples or other kinds of fruit.

    • 3

Create the walls out of cereal boxes, milk cartons and juice boxes. Flatten cereal boxes and cover them with paper. Paint or color in details such as stone and windows. Fold cereal boxes into rectangles to create the tall castle keeps. Cut arch-shaped holes into the sides for windows. The smaller milk and juice cartons can become stables, houses and other sections within the castle.

    • 4

Use oatmeal containers or paper towel tubes for the tall towers of the castle. Draw and cut out a circle from a piece of paper and then cut a straight slit from the edge to the center of the circle. Shape the circle into a cone, overlapping at the slit and fasten with tape or glue. Glue the cone to the top of an oatmeal container/paper towel tube tower.

    • 5

Attach all the parts together onto the base using masking tape and glue. Once the castle walls are set, add the trees and smaller buildings. Cut out a rectangle shape from one of the walls to form a drawbridge.

    • 6

Paint white glue onto the base and sprinkle with sand once everything is in place. Allow the glue to dry. Use rocks and sticks to make pathways and bridges inside the castle. Paint the walls and buildings.

Tips & Warnings

  • When folding cardboard, use a wood ruler for a sharper edge fold.
