How to Make a Client-Server Network
The client-server networking model is the most common and preferred form of networking for both computers and mobile devices. Having one central resource, the server that handles all incoming requests improves efficiency when it comes to resource access and communication among connecting clients. A client server network also makes it easy to quickly update network resources and have them accessible instantly to all the clients. The recent explosion of the cloud-computing model is a good example of a client-server network model.

1
Determine needs and options. Carefully evaluate the company's size and think about how its networking will improve efficiency. Create a list of the computers to include on the network, the size of the office and the budget for the project.
-
2
Isolate one computer as the server and install on it a server operating system. Ensure that it has sufficient hard disk memory and random access memory for handling a large number of clients simultaneously.
-
-
3
Connect the server physically to a router into which all other client computers connect to as well. Where the server computer acts as the Internet gateway allowing network computers access to the Internet, ensure that the server has two network cards, one for Internet access and the other for the Local Area Network.
-
4
Set up the other client computers by physically connecting them to the router or routers and then configure their operating systems. All client computers should be accessible to each other when configured correctly.
-
5
Log into the server using the Administrator account and configure resource access for the network.
-
6
Assign dynamic IP addresses to client computers and set user permissions for each shared resource on the server. The server operating system automatically detects all the resources and client computers connected and using the setup wizard helps you make the necessary configurations.
-
7
Set up login details for each client computer, if required, which includes the login name and password.

Tips & Warnings
It is appropriate to purchase a server computer when making a client server network. These computers come with server-based processors, large and fast memory, a number of network interface cards and a backup power supply. Most of these computers also come with a server operating system configurable for any client-server network model.
