Make a fake navel ring to experience the piercing without the pain.

Belly-button piercings and navel rings are worn by women around the world, but the piercing can be painful, expensive or difficult to care for properly. Before spending the money to get professionally pierced, see if you like the look of a belly-button piercing on your body by making your own fake navel ring. With the appropriate materials, making a fake navel ring with a captive bead is a quick jewelry project that can be worn immediately.

Things You'll Need

  • 14-gauge wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Metal or gemstone bead
  • Eyelash adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Cut approximately 3/4 inch of wire, preferably stainless steel wire.

    • 2

Slide the bead onto the wire. Clamp the needle-nose pliers on the very edge --- about a millimeter in --- of one end of the wire and curl it into a tight, closed loop. This will be the end that is inserted into the navel.

    • 3

Use the pliers to bend the wire into a ring.

    • 4

Try on the navel ring to check fit. If it sticks out too much, trim down the end of the wire that does not have the closed loop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use stainless steel wire to avoid allergic reactions.

  • Use a small drop of super glue to hold the bead permanently in place if you don't want it moving on the navel ring.

  • Once the navel ring fits well, place a small dot of eyelash glue on both ends of the navel ring. Insert the closed loop end into the navel and position the flat end onto the skin --- usually right above the belly button, though you can shift the positioning. Clamp the ring down by gently squeezing the wire ends onto the skin inside and outside the belly button, but do not squeeze the navel ring too tightly. Stop squeezing when you feel that the navel ring has a firm grip on the skin.

  • To remove the fake navel ring, swab the ends of the navel ring with eyelash adhesive remover. Then use the pliers to gently open up the ring enough so it can be pulled away from the belly button.

  • Handle the wire cutters with care, cutting slowly to avoid small pieces of the wire from splitting off.
