Most engineers have a specific areas of focus that they have studied and worked within, so it is often good to market yourself by highlighting your skills and experience. Once consultants have built up clientele, they are more likely to be hired again to work on further projects for those clients and others.

1. Obtain skills in engineering by getting a bachelor's or master's degree in a field of engineering. Types of engineering include civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, biomedical, geotechnical and architectural.

2. Become a part of an engineering firm to work as a consultant with other engineers, or create a consulting business on your own by obtaining clients you can provide engineering work for. Begin by working for a few clients on individual projects that require the planning, drafting and building skills of an engineer. Once you have completed several projects, you can use them in a portfolio as a display of your work to help you obtain new clients and projects.

3. Develop your engineering skills so you can branch out on your consulting work. The more versatile you are, the more opportunities there will be. You also can attract other engineers and develop your own consulting firm to handle many types of engineering projects.
