How to Convert the Raster to a Shape in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop includes many tools for designing an image or editing an existing image, including several brush and shape options that you can add to your image. Additionally, you can create your own shape if one of the pre-installed Photoshop shapes does not meet your needs. You create these shapes from existing images, provided that the images are vector images. If your current shape is a raster image, you only need to define a vector path from the raster, then create your shape.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch Photoshop.

    • 2

Click "File" at the top of the window, then click "Open."

    • 3

Browse to your raster image and click it once to highlight it, then click "Open."

    • 4

Click the layer of your image that contains the raster.

    • 5

Click the "Magic Wand" tool from the toolbar at the left side of the screen, then click on the background of your image. This highlights all of the image except for the rastered part.

    • 6

Click "Select" at the top of the window, then click "Inverse." This selects the rastered portion of your image.

    • 7

Click the "Paths" tab from the "Layers" window at the right side of the Photoshop window.

    • 8

Click the "Make Work Path From Selection" icon.

    • 9

Click "Edit" at the top of the window, then click "Define Custom Shape."

    • 10

Type a name for your shape, then click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • Shapes can only be created in grayscale. If you want to add color to your shape, do it manually with the paint bucket or brush tool.
