How to Get Rid of Shine on the Face

Clear up oil on the skin with at-home treatments.

If your face is shiny, chances are you have oily skin, or skin that is prone to be oily in certain conditions, such as humidity. Aside from wanting to look fresh and clean, you may want to fix your shiny skin to ward off acne and blackheads. However, when improving oily skin, you don't want to dry it out too much, which comes with another host of problems.

Oily Skin Tips

1. 

   Wash your face twice daily.

   Wash your face twice daily, in the morning and before you go to bed. This clears up any pore-clogging oils that result in acne. Choose a facial wash that's designed for oily skin. If you're also battling acne, opt for a facial cleanser that contains zinc. Aside from causing oily skin, clogged pores can also cause inflammation and irritation.

2. 

   Fresh lemon is a great astringent.

   Squeeze half a lemon into a glass container. Dilute with water, use a cotton ball to sop up some of the mixture, and smooth over your face. When used as a toner, lemon reduces oil and shine and cleans perspiration.

3. Apply a face mask one to two times per week. You can either purchase a face mask designed for oily skin or make your own at home.

4. 

   Keep your hands away from your face for healthy skin.

   Avoid touching your face when possible. Putting your fingers and hands on your face increases oil production and transfers oil-clogging dirt to your pores, which only worsens your problem.

Strawberry and Yogurt Mask

1. 

   Strawberries make a great face mask.

   Mash up six washed strawberries in a small bowl, using a fork.

2. 

   Mix plain yogurt with mashed strawberries.

   Mix in 1 tbsp. of plain yogurt.

3. Apply the mixture to the face evenly.

4. Rinse the mask off using cold water after 20 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

• While it's tempting to treat your face in a way that dries it out and reduces shine, this isn't part of a healthy skincare regime. Avoid using harsh soaps when washing your face and veer from skincare products that contain alcohol.
