How to Make a Pirate Sash
After seeing one of the many "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies or even "Peter Pan," your child may have approached you with the idea of making him a pirate costume for trick-or-treat night. One trip to the fabric store or digging through your fabric stash at home is all you need to begin making a pirate sash for your child's Halloween costume.

1
Cut zigzag or "V"-shaped pieces out of each end of the 1/8 yard of fabric strip. The sash ends then match the zigzag pattern commonly found on the bottom of pirate pants resembling wear and tear on the clothing at sea.
-
2
Fold 1/8 yard of fabric in half, matching up the ends. Make a mark in the center of the length of the fabric with a pencil.
-
-
3
Stand to the side of the costume wearer and place the pencil mark on his opposite hip bone. Pull the ends of the fabric around his body like a cloth belt and crisscross the fabric pieces.
-
4
Turn the child around and tie the two ends of the fabric together using a double knot. Position the knot over the center mark on the fabric, near the child's hip bone. One end of the sash should be a bit longer than the other.

Tips & Warnings
When the pirate pants are black or black-and-white striped, a red sash complements the costume, but if the pants are red-and-white striped, use a black sash.
