How to Use Telnet in Leopard

Telnet is a command-line protocol used for connecting to another computer in early UNIX-based networking environments. The protocol is rarely used anymore since it has been replaced by other protocols, most of which are deemed to be somewhat more secure. If you have use for Telnet, however, you will be glad to know that it is fully supported in Mac OS X Leopard and it is accessible through the terminal application, the operating system's command-line interface.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Applications" folder icon in the dock and click "Utilities." Click "Terminal" to open the Terminal application. The terminal window opens with a blinking cursor command line.

    • 2

Type "telnet" without the quotes and press enter on the keyboard. This invokes the telnet command.

    • 3

Type "help" without the quotes and press enter on the keyboard. This gives a listing of all the available commands that can be used within the Telnet protocol.

    • 4

Type "quit" without the quotes to end the Telnet session and click the close button at the top of the window to close the Terminal application.
