Use multiple colors of tulle to create a more layered tutu effect.

Dressing a young girl up in a tutu can make her feel like a ballerina or princess. A tutu may be worn for play, for her birthday or as a costume for Halloween. Tutus may come in a variety of colors, layers and lengths. A ballerina tutu is typically short while princess tutus may go over the knees.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the waist with a measuring tape to determine the length of elastic band needed. Add 3 inches to the elastic band length for room to tie the ends together into a knot. You will need a total of two elastic bands to create separate layers to the tutu.

    • 2

Measure the length from the waist to the top of the knees or the point at which you want the tutu to end. Multiply the measurement by two to determine the length you will need for each tulle strand. You will also need tulle strands that are 3 inches shorter than the other measurement to create another layer to the tutu.

    • 3

Cut multiple strands of 6-inch wide tulle to the calculated lengths. Tie the longer length strands to one elastic band until it is fully covered and do the same with the other elastic band using the shorter length strands. For an even length, knot the tulle to the elastic band at its midpoint.

Slip the tutu on to the waist and trim the tulle with scissors for a more even length at the edge of each layer, if necessary.

    • 5

Slip the tutu on to the waist and trim the tulle with scissors for a more even length at the edge of each layer, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a more visible layered tutu, select different colors of tulle for each layer.
