How to Use Props in Your Professional Speaking Presentation
Using props in a speech can help focus your audience's attention and engage them in what you are discussing. Many times a prop can illustrate your point better than words alone. Examples of props include pictures, movie clips and slideshow presentations. No matter what prop you decide to use in your speech, you must learn how to use it correctly to ensure it has a positive effect on your audience.

Let your audience know when you will use your prop. Showing the prop too suddenly can distract them from listening to the rest of your speech. You might say, "The object I am about to introduce to you will help illustrate my point." Explain how the prop relates to your speech in clear detail without talking about it too long.

Avoid using a prop that does not relate to your speech topic. No matter how interesting it is, using a prop that has nothing to do with the content of your speech will not enhance the quality of your speech.

Do not use a prop that is too heavy for you to carry or is very valuable. Bringing in valuable props increases the chance of them being stolen. If the prop you want to bring is too big or too valuable, take a picture of it and show it on an overhead projector.

Test any electrical equipment beforehand. For example, if you use a radio or an overhead projector as one of your props, make sure it works properly. Familiarize yourself with how to operate it properly before you give your speech.

Do not use too many props in your speech. Using too many distract your audience. Choose two or three good props to show your audience. If you do have more than one prop in your speech, put them in order so they are easy to pick up and put down.
