How to Post Property Against Trespassing

How to Post Property Against Trespassing thumbnail
Posting a sign isn't required to keep trespassers away.

Trespassing is the act of entering property belonging to someone else without permission. It's illegal to trespass in all states, which should be enough to keep people from trespassing on your property. However, knowing that trespassing is illegal isn't always sufficient; sometimes you have to take extra precautions. One way to remind potential trespassers that you don't tolerate trespassing is to post a sign on your property stating that trespassing isn't permitted.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a sign warning people not to trespass. Many stores sell "Keep Out," "Trespassers May Be Prosecuted," "Private Property" and "No Trespassing" signs.

    • 2

Post your sign in a visible location. If you want to keep solicitors from walking to your door trying to sell you something, post the sign at the entrance to your driveway. If you have a large parcel of land, post signs in more than one location.

    • 3

Post signs securely. Nail the signs to a tree or attach them to a post. Bury the end of the post deep enough to keep the sign from falling over. If your sign isn't posted securely, it could blow away or be easily removed.
