How to Winterize a Potted Juniper Spiral
Junipers are an evergreen shrub or tree that can easily be grown in containers. Gardeners can also prune junipers into a spiral shape for a decorative effect. Caring for spiral, pot-grown junipers in the winter involves protecting them from repeatedly freezing and thawing, which can damage the plant. You must also keep the juniper properly hydrated. Spiral junipers must be winterized in the same fashion as a regular juniper. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Move the potted juniper to a protected location, out of cold winter winds. This can be your garage, shed or a sheltered side of your home.
-
2
Spray the foliage of the spiral juniper with an anti-dessicant spray. This will prevent the needles from losing excess moisture during the winter. Follow the package directions for application instructions. Apply the product in the late fall, after the first two frosts. Re-apply mid-winter.

3
Water the pot soil thoroughly, so water comes out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Do not let the plant go into winter with dry soil or it may brown.
-
4
Create a mound of topsoil around the plant's pot that reaches over the top of the pot and covers it by 3 to 4 inches. You can also use organic mulch for this, such as shredded leaves or pine needles. The soil or mulch will insulate the pot and protect the roots from freezing.
-
5
Use a shovel to move snow over the soil mound throughout the winter. The snow will contribute to the insulation.
