How to Braid Your Own Bullrope

A bull rope is what hangs off a bull and allows the rider to hold on. This rope wraps around the bull's chest and right behind the front legs. There is a metal bell on the bottom of the rope, so it has some weight and will fall off when the rider dismounts. However, bull ropes have many other uses besides riding a bull. These ropes can be used to tie objects down or as a whip for decorative purposes. It is possible to braid or make your own bull rope.

Instructions

    • 1

Rub off any threads from the leather strips with a sharp knife. This makes the leather as smooth as possible. Add plaiting soap to the leather strips until they are soft and easily bendable. This may take a few separate applications. If the leather strips are pliable, it helps make the rope strong.

    • 2

Grab three leather strands and secure the ends together with a piece of string. Hang the strips over a secure surface such as the back of a chair or a door knob, so you can tighten the braiding as you work.

    • 3

Begin braiding the leather strands by crossing the left strand over the middle piece and pull tightly. Cross the right leather strand over the middle one and pull again. Keep braiding in this way, tightening as you go, until you are finished.

    • 4

Secure a piece of twine around the bottom of the rope by tying in a knot. Pull the rope down from wherever you secured it. Wind the rope around your hand and push the loose end through the loop. Make a knot at the base of the rope. Repeat this for the opposite side of the rope. The knots are necessary to hold the rope together, so you can use it to tie things, or it comes undone. Do not tie the ends if you are using the rope as a whip. Trim off any loose ends from the leather pieces, to give it a neat appearance.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can create your own plaiting soap. Melt strips of soap in hot water, then mix neatsfoot oil until it is thick.

  • Use caution when working with sharp objects such as knives, so you do not injure yourself.

  • Test the rope for strength before using.
