How to Softboil Eggs

How to Softboil Eggs thumbnail
Soft-boiled eggs are usually served in decorated egg holders.

If you're an egg lover, you have hard-boiled eggs down to a science, but soft-boiled eggs are a little trickier. Leaving them in the hot water for just one minute longer than they should will result in overcooked, nearly hard-boiled eggs. Remove them to soon, and the whites won't be set, resulting in a soggy, watery mess. The key to making soft-boiled eggs properly is to use a timer and watch the time carefully.

Fortunately watched pots do boil, so with a little practice you'll be enjoying a soft-boiled egg in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pot on the stove halfway with water. Bring to a full boil.

    • 2

Reduce the temperature on the stove slightly so that the water is at a rapid simmer and carefully add the eggs.

    • 3

Cook the eggs for three to five minutes depending on how runny you want the egg yolk to be. Add another minute or two for yolks that are just barely set.

    • 4

Remove the egg from the water and rinse under cold water for 1 minute to stop the cooking process.

    • 5

slice the pointed end of the egg carefully with a knife or egg cutter if you have one to reveal the runny yolk inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • Enjoy the soft-boiled eggs with strips of dry toast for dipping, or asparagus.
