How to Make a Needlepoint Belt
Unlike women in the Middle Ages, women today no longer wear a belt on which to hang their purse, pocket or fan. Belts today are fashion accessories. A hand-made needlepoint belt with ribbon ties is a unique addition to your wardrobe. Quick to stitch and uncomplicated to finish, hand-made belts are an appreciated addition to any wardrobe.

1
The needlepoint design will determine the width of the belt. Stitch three rows of solid color above and below the design and leave three rows of canvas unstitched above, below and at each end.
-
2
Measure the wearer's waist and subtract one inch. Cut needlepoint canvas to this length and the width calculated previously from the design.
-
-
3
Cover the edges of the canvas with masking tape to prevent the thread getting caught and the canvas fraying.
-
4
Match the center of the design to the center of the belt canvas. Start working the design from the center. When the design is complete, press the unstitched canvas to the back and tack it down.
-
5
Sew the backing fabric to both long sides. Before sewing the narrow ends, insert one end of one piece of ribbon in each end, then sew the backing to the ribbon and to the needlepoint canvas. The belt is tied with two ribbons.

Tips & Warnings
Add a personal touch to the design and use a small motif related to the wearer's hobby or favorite sport.
A D-ring buckle is another way to quickly finish the belt.
