How to Decoupage Books

Decoupage is a creative and inexpensive way to give a face lift to furniture and other items. Decoupage items are highly popular. You could spend money at your local store for these decorative items, or you could do it on your own. The decoupage process is simple and can be completed using any type of picture, paper or fabric as decoration. If this is your first time doing decoupage, try decorating something small, such as a book.

Things You'll Need

  • Foam paintbrush
  • Decoupage medium
  • Pictures or desired decoration
  • Paintbrush
  • Acrylic sealant

Instructions

      Use a foam paintbrush to apply decoupage medium to the cover of the book or area to be decorated.

      Place picture or other desired decoration onto the decoupage medium.

      Use a small paintbrush to smooth out any bubbles.

      Repeat the above steps, until the entire area has been decorated.

      Use a sponge paintbrush to apply three more coats of decoupage medium. Allow the medium to dry between each coat.

      Use a small paintbrush to apply a thin layer of acrylic sealant to the newly decorated area. Allow the book to dry overnight.

Tips & Warnings

  • If decoupage medium is unavailable, white glue can be used as a substitute.

  • To avoid ruining the bonding process, be sure to allow each application of decoupage medium to dry completely before applying a new coat.
