How to Figure Out Your Shipping Costs With UPS
The United Parcel Service was established as a messenger and package delivery service by James E. Casey in 1907 and has transformed over a century into the world-wide shipping service we know today. UPS has many locations across the globe and delivers boxes, tubes and letters in various sized packaging for a consumer or company-paid fee. Calculating shipping charges can be tricky and requires the shipper to know the type of package, the weight including the product, packaging and the box, and how far the package is being shipped.

1
Identify what type of package you are sending, whether a box or a letter envelope, as well as where the package is going to determine shipping distance.
-
2
Insert packaging material and the item to be shipped into its shipping medium and weigh it using either a postage scale or by standing on a scale that reads pounds and ounces to read your weight, standing on it again holding the package and subtracting your weight from the combined weight of you and the package.

3
Determine when the package should arrive at its destination and what type of shipping is necessary. UPS offers UPS Ground, UPS 3 Day Select, UPS Second Day Air and UPS Next Day Air, each at a different fee depending on weight.
-
4
Contact UPS either by phone or on the website to determine if previous shipping rates have changed before calculating the cost. Use the online calculator on the UPS website to find exact shipping costs by inserting the information into the designated fields and pressing "Submit."
-
5
Transport the package to a nearby UPS store and ask the UPS representative to weigh the box and offer an exact rate for shipping, as an alternate method of acquiring the cost.
