How to Bead a Quilt

By beading a quilt, you can transform a traditional quilt into a piece of artwork you can place on a bed or a wall, or give as a meaningful gift. You can easily find many different styles of beads to match any quilt. Instructions

    • 1

Plan out your bead design by making a small sketch on paper of your quilt. You can use colored pencils to show where you want to add beading to the quilt and the color of beads you'll use.

    • 2

Choose a color of thread that matches the color of beads you're using, unless you want your thread to leap out against the color of your quilt.

    • 3

Tie a knot at one end of your thread.

    • 4

String your thread through the quilt from the quilt's underside at the point where you want to sew on a bead.

    • 5

String the bead onto your thread.

    • 6

Bring the thread back through your quilt from the top side to the underside, to lock the bead in its place. Do the same for each bead you want to sew on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Quilting thread is the best type of thread for beading quilts.

  • Hand wash beaded quilts; do not machine wash.

  • Do not bead quilts intended to be used by small children or infants, as beads are a choking hazard.

  • Do not iron or dry in a dryer.
